Balloons and Bazaars: A mesmerizing adventure in Cappadocia and Istanbul

Introduction

I wonder if anyone has come across images of Cappadocia showcasing volcanic rock formations against a sky adorned with hot air balloons in a myriad of colors and not felt the urge to be there with the mere press of a button. This destination, lingering on my travel bucket list for a few years, was finally explored in January 2022.

While my primary goal was to visit Cappadocia, the absence of a direct flight connection between Athens and Cappadocia prompted me to spend some time in Constantinople as well. This city, steeped in historical and cultural significance, had always intrigued me, and the ease of visiting made it an opportune choice. Traveling during the winter months presented both advantages and drawbacks, with less crowded places contrasting with unpredictable weather. Constantinople offered a more balanced climate, akin to my hometown Athens, while Cappadocia, sitting in eastern Anatolia at a 1000m height plateau, often experienced snowfall and harsh winter conditions. Fortunately, my time there coincided with sunny days and moderate cold, affirming that I had made the right decision.

My experience in Asia Minor surpassed all expectations

As a Greek navigating through Asia Minor, thoughts of the historical conflicts between Greeks and Turks gave rise to some skepticism about the reception I might receive from the locals. Would people be friendly? Would there be attempts to overcharge or scam me, a common concern documented in travel forums? However, my experience in Asia Minor surpassed all expectations. The locals, regardless of borders and historical narratives, went out of their way to make me feel at home. Not a single moment did I encounter frustration, even during a hiccup with my credit card transaction for the car rental. The warmth extended to me was a testament to the genuine hospitality of the people.

Cappadocia

After landing at Nevsehir Airport via Istanbul Airport, I picked up a car and drove to Goreme, my chosen base for exploring the region. The peaceful drive on well-maintained roads, though dark, gradually revealed the illuminated rock formations of Goreme, making the small town appear picturesque. Before settling into my cave room, nestled inside a fairy chimney, I stopped at a kebab place for a late dinner. Despite the late hour, the restaurant manager’s welcoming demeanor, especially upon learning about my Greek ethnicity, set a positive tone. From our conversation, I gathered that Cappadocia was unusually quiet during these days due to COVID-related travel restrictions and the low-season period. Moreover, I learned that, according to common people, borders were secondary to peaceful coexistence and shared experiences.

The balloon flight, a surreal experience

My introduction to the local cuisine was promising, confirming the praises I had heard about Turkish gastronomy. Exhausted, I retired early, anticipating an early wake-up call at 05:15 for my first hot air balloon flight. Boarding the hot air balloon company’s minivan in the freezing darkness, I was on my way to the take-off area. The balloon flight, a surreal experience at almost 1000m above ground, revealed the captivating beauty of Cappadocia during sunrise.

The panorama of volcanic formations, bathed in the morning light, accompanied by nearly 150 hot air balloons, was straight out of a fairytale. The controlled landing, though a bit rough, marked the success of my first hot air balloon flight.

A cave room inside a fairy chimney, a highlight of this trip

Following my inaugural hot air balloon ride, I returned to the unique accommodation of my choice. A cave room inside a fairy chimney, a highlight of this trip which revealed its unique charm in the daylight. After enjoying breakfast, I set out to explore the next set of attractions, such as the underground city of Derinkuyu, Uchisar Castle, the Pigeon Valley and the Love Valley.

Another indulgent dinner concluded the day as I prepared for the next adventure – a second hot air balloon flight on the agency’s recommendation for ideal weather conditions.

My time in Cappadocia exceeded expectations, filled with smooth experiences and breathtaking moments

The third day began with another early wake-up call, and I found myself at the take-off location, realizing that I was about to embark on a second hot air balloon flight. The clear weather enhanced the experience, making it even more magical than the previous day. After landing, I enjoyed sparkling wine and breakfast offered by the hot air balloon agency and then I set to explore the rest of the attractions for the day. I continued sightseeing Goreme Open Air Museum, Pasabag Valley  and the Fairy Chimneys with breaks for delicious food, ending the day with a journey to Nevsehir for my flight to Istanbul. My time in Cappadocia exceeded expectations, filled with smooth experiences and breathtaking moments.

Istanbul

Arriving in Istanbul late at night, I reached the hotel to rest for the next two days dedicated to exploring this city straddling Europe and Asia.

Hagia Sophia left me awe-struck with its historical significance and intricate design

During my time in Istanbul, I immersed myself in a myriad of captivating landmarks that each held a distinct allure. Hagia Sophia, a monumental architectural marvel standing tall for nearly 1500 years, left me awe-struck with its historical significance and intricate design. The Blue Mosque, with its iconic blue tiles and grand domes, transported me to a realm of spiritual elegance. Galata Tower, offering panoramic views of the city, became a vantage point to appreciate Istanbul’s vast expanse.

Navigating through the bustling Grand Bazaar was a sensory overload of vibrant colors, intricate crafts, and the merchants’ voice trying to lure you in one of their shops.. The lively energy of Istiklal Avenue, lined with shops, cafes, and historic buildings, presented a modern contrast to the historical richness of the city.

Taksim Square, a central hub for social gatherings, provided a glimpse into contemporary Turkish life. Dolmabahce Palace, an opulent symbol of Ottoman grandeur, showcased the lavish lifestyle of the empire’s rulers. Exploring the expansive Topkapi Palace, I delved into the splendid world of Ottoman history, adorned with ornate courtyards and intriguing artifacts.

Pera, with its narrow streets and charming cafes, exuded a bohemian atmosphere

Venturing into the neighborhoods of Pera, Fener, and Kadikoy allowed me to witness the diverse tapestry of Istanbul’s local life. Pera, with its narrow streets and charming cafes, exuded a bohemian atmosphere. Fener, characterized by its historic Greek Orthodox churches, unfolded the religious and cultural heritage of the city. Kadikoy, on the Asian side of Istanbul, offered a more laid-back ambiance with waterfront views and a vibrant street market.

Each location, rich in history and culture, added layers to my Istanbul experience, creating a mosaic of memories that vividly captured the essence of this captivating city.

Amidst sightseeing, I sampled Istanbul’s top-tier street food. From savory kebabs bursting with aromatic spices to relishing sweet treats like baklava and simit, each bite was a journey into the rich and diverse gastronomic landscape of Turkey.

While my time in Istanbul was filled with enchanting experiences, two aspects left a bitter taste. The transformation of Hagia Sophia from a museum to a mosque saddened me, as it altered the historical and cultural atmosphere that once defined this architectural marvel. Additionally, the prevalent scamming tactics employed by taxi drivers, including deceptive tricks and unnecessary detours, detracted from the overall enjoyment of navigating the city’s vibrant streets.

Conclusion – General Remarks

In reflecting upon my journey through Cappadocia and Istanbul, the warmth and hospitality of the people left an indelible mark, making me feel not just like a visitor, but a welcomed guest. The culinary adventures, with each bite revealing the diverse tapestry of Turkish flavors, were a constant delight. The unique and enchanting landscapes of Cappadocia, coupled with the surreal experience of drifting above it in a hot air balloon, created memories that transcended the ordinary. Together, the people, food, distinctive landscapes, and the ethereal hot air balloon experience wove together an unforgettable tapestry, leaving me grateful for the enriching cultural immersion and the warmth of Turkish hospitality.
