Introduction
In August 2022, I embarked on an incredible journey to Tanzania, fueled by the dual excitement of experiencing a safari and exploring the enchanting Zanzibar. Landing in Arusha, a city nestled at the foothills of Mount Meru, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the vibrant atmosphere and the warm hospitality of the Tanzanian people.
My adventure began with a late-night arrival, allowing me a mere 5 hours of rest before the safari driver whisked us away the next morning. Arusha, with its bustling markets and friendly locals, offered a glimpse into the daily life of Tanzanians. The city’s unique blend of modernity and tradition set the stage for the diverse experiences that awaited.
Manyara National Park
The first stop of our safari trip was Manyara National Park, where the vast landscapes welcomed us to a breathtaking safari experience. As our safari vehicle navigated through the park’s diverse terrain, the air buzzed with excitement.
The majestic sight of elephants grazing peacefully, their colossal forms against the backdrop of the savanna, left an indelible impression. Lions, the regal rulers of the African plains, made a majestic appearance, their presence commanding awe and respect. Giraffes gracefully moved through the acacia trees, their long necks reaching for the leaves, while zebras showcased their iconic black and white stripes, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.
Every moment in Manyara felt like a brushstroke of nature’s masterpiece, and the encounter with these magnificent creatures underscored the untamed beauty of the African wilderness.
Seeing lions roam the plains, elephants wander freely, and giraffes graze against the golden backdrop of the savannah was not just a moment—it was the heartbeat of the wild, a vivid reminder of nature’s raw beauty.
As the day progressed, we enjoyed our lunch at a campsite, after which we resumed our game drives. With the sun gracefully setting, we eventually arrived in the charming town of Mto Wa Mbu. Here, we settled into modest accommodation, preparing to rest for the exciting adventures that awaited us in the coming days.
Serengeti National Park
The following day marked our journey to Serengeti, passing through the awe-inspiring Ngorongoro.
Embarking on our safari day in Serengeti not only introduced us to a vastly different landscape from Manyara but also subjected us to an adventurous journey.
The drive to Serengeti was an endurance test, featuring an extensive and bumpy road that seemed determined to challenge our resilience. The dusty trail, kicked up by the wheels of our safari vehicle, enveloped us in a hazy atmosphere, turning the inside of the car into a temporary dust haven.

However, the arduous journey was a small price to pay for the extraordinary spectacle that awaited us in Serengeti. Serengeti became our playground for a day filled with game drives. Witnessing animals in their natural habitat was a surreal experience. As the day wound down, we set up camp amidst the wilderness, cooking meals and sleeping under the vast African sky, surrounded by the sounds of the wild.
As night fell, zebras and buffalos grazed on the surrounding fauna, coming remarkably close to our tents.

As we shone our torches into the darkness, we were met with the glint of numerous pairs of eyes staring back at us. .
However, with the night came a cautious reminder of the wild – we were advised to use a flashlight before venturing outside our tents to ensure no nocturnal and potentially aggressive animals were lingering nearby. This precaution became particularly vital when, in the midst of the night, nature called, prompting us to visit the bathroom. As we shone our torches into the darkness, we were met with the glint of numerous pairs of eyes staring back at us. Thankfully, our nocturnal visitors remained peaceful, allowing us to appreciate the unique adventure of sleeping in a tent amidst the Serengeti’s wildlife. Undoubtedly, this experience is a highly recommended must-do for anyone embarking on a safari adventure.
Ngorongoro National Park
The following morning, after enjoying a hearty breakfast and packing up our tents, we ushered in another round of early game drives in Serengeti. Our journey then directed us towards Ngorongoro, where we delved into a day filled with exhilarating game drives. The culmination of this adventurous day found us settling in for the night at the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater.
The crater, formed from the collapse of a volcanic caldera, cradles a diverse ecosystem within its walls, creating a microcosm of African wildlife.
Ngorongoro Crater stands as a unique jewel in Tanzania’s safari landscape, setting itself apart from the expansive grandeur of Serengeti in distinctive ways. Unlike the vast, open savannah of Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater is a natural amphitheater, showcasing a more enclosed and intimate setting. The crater, formed from the collapse of a volcanic caldera, cradles a diverse ecosystem within its walls, creating a microcosm of African wildlife.
This geographical formation contributes to a higher density of animals, making it a prime location for wildlife enthusiasts. Ngorongoro also boasts a more concentrated and varied habitat, featuring lush forests, grassy plains, and a soda lake. Additionally, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area allows for a unique coexistence of wildlife and the Maasai people, who inhabit the surrounding areas. The distinctiveness of Ngorongoro lies not only in its breathtaking scenery but also in its ability to encapsulate a rich diversity of wildlife within a relatively compact space, offering a safari experience unlike any other.
Tents were skillfully pitched, a communal dinner was shared, and we surrender ourselves to the serene tranquility of the crater’s encompassing beauty.
In Ngorongoro, from our tent, we could stare at one of the clearest skies we had ever seen.
Sleeping on the Ngorongoro Crater rim in tents was a remarkable experience during our Tanzanian safari. As the sun set, we settled into our tents, feeling the chill in the air due to the altitude which was almost 2250m. Yet, the cold became inconsequential as we looked up at one of the clearest skies we had ever seen. The Milky Way stretched across the darkness, visible to the naked eye. The night was colder than expected, but the sight of the starry sky made it worthwhile.
In our tents, we could hear animals passing by, adding a sense of adventure to the night. The close proximity of wildlife, with their silhouettes against the starlit sky, created a unique and humbling experience. Sharing the night with these creatures, feeling the cool mountain air, made for a memorable and down-to-earth moment under the African stars on the Ngorongoro Crater rim.
Visiting a Maasai Village
Waking up to the beauty of Ngorongoro, we embarked on early morning game drives before venturing to a Maasai camp. Our visit to a Maasai camp was a fascinating immersion into their traditional way of life. As we strolled through the camp, we had the opportunity to observe their school and houses, gaining insight into their daily routines. The Maasai graciously shared their skills with us, demonstrating how to light a fire without modern equipment, using methods passed down through generations.
Visiting the Maasai village was trully educational and eye-opening.
Engaging conversations unfolded as they offered a glimpse into their unique way of living, sharing stories that bridged the gap between our worlds. The cultural exchange reached its peak as we joined in a lively dance with the Maasai, breaking into laughter and enjoying the joyous rhythm of their traditional tunes. The experience was not just educational but also filled with the warmth of shared moments, fostering a sense of connection and mutual appreciation. In those moments, the Maasai opened their world to us, leaving us with lasting memories of a cultural exchange filled with laughter, dance, and genuine human connection.
Continuing our journey, we drove back to Arusha, where a well-deserved night’s rest awaited.
Materuni Waterfall
The next morning, our destination shifted to Materuni in Mount Kilimanjaro. Here, the majestic Materuni waterfall and a local coffee plantation awaited our exploration. On a hike to Materuni Waterfall in Tanzania, the path led us through lush surroundings, and along the way, we stumbled upon some adorable little chameleons blending into the greenery. As we neared the waterfall, its powerful cascade became increasingly audible, creating a striking natural spectacle.
An unforgettable hike, made even more special by the warm companionship of the incredibly friendly Tanzanian children.
During our descent, we were accompanied by friendly Tanzanian children who noticed we had dropped a buff on the trail. With cheerful smiles, they retrieved it and caught up with us to return the lost item. Their warm gestures added a touch of local hospitality to our trek.
The Materuni Waterfall, with its impressive display, became more than just a scenic spot; it encapsulated the blend of nature’s wonders and the genuine kindness of the Tanzanian community. The little chameleons and the unexpected assistance from the local children turned a simple hike into a memorable experience.
In the afternoon, we bid farewell to the mainland, taking a flight to the tropical paradise of Zanzibar.
Zanzibar
While in Zanzibar, I spent 3 nights in Nungwi and another 2 nights in Stone Town. During my five nights in Zanzibar, each day unfolded with its own unique charm and memorable experiences.

On the first day, I set out to explore the vibrant Nungwi village on my way to the beach. The lively streets, infused with the local culture, provided a glimpse into the daily lives of the residents, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Swimming with turtles, an incredible opportunity.
Eager for an adventure, I visited the sea turtle conservation center, where I had the incredible opportunity to swim alongside these gentle creatures. The encounter left me in awe of their grace and added a touch of wonder to my day. Following this unforgettable experience, we headed to the pristine shores to cool off in the crystal-clear sea. As the sun began its descent, we witnessed one of the most breathtaking sunsets of my life, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink.
In Nungwi, we savored delicious seafood dinners right on the beach, dining with our toes in the sand under the stars.
With the memory of the stunning sunset lingering, we retreated to our hotel room to freshen up for the evening. The night unfolded with a delightful dinner at a seaside restaurant, where the ambiance was as captivating as the menu. We indulged in an array of seafood and lobster dishes, each bite a celebration of the coastal flavors. The sound of waves crashing against the shore provided the perfect soundtrack to an evening filled with good food, great company, and the lingering magic of Nungwi’s coastal beauty.

The following day kicked off with an early start as we embarked on a half-day boat excursion, setting the stage for another chapter of our adventure in Nungwi. Our first stop was the mesmerizing Mnemba Island, a haven of pristine waters, vibrant coral reefs, and a kaleidoscope of marine life. The sheer beauty of the underwater world made it an idyllic spot for a refreshing swim, surrounded by the enchanting aquatic landscape.

The boat captain then navigated to a special spot where dolphins, accustomed to freely swimming in the vast ocean, congregated in search of food. As we approached, the sight of these incredible creatures leaping and playing in their natural habitat was awe-inspiring. The decision to swim with the dolphins was met with excitement, marking a clear highlight of our Tanzanian journey.
With utmost respect for their wellbeing, we refrained from touching the dolphins, ensuring that our encounter was a harmonious and unforgettable experience. The sheer joy of swimming alongside these majestic creatures in their oceanic playground created memories that would forever remain etched in the tapestry of our Nungwi adventure.
After the half-day boat trip, we headed to Nungwi beach to chill and swim. The sun-soaked sands were perfect for unwinding, and the water offered a refreshing escape. As the day turned into evening, we opted for another seafood dinner, this time by the beach. With the sound of the waves in the background, we enjoyed tasty seafood and drinks, embracing the laid-back vibe of Nungwi. The simplicity of a beachside evening, good food, and pleasant company made for a relaxed and enjoyable night on the Tanzanian coast.
Our visit to Zanzibar’s spice farm was an eye-opening journey, offering us a deep insight into the island’s rich agricultural heritage and the flavors that shape its identity.
The following day, our journey led us to Stone Town, but not without a pit stop at a renowned spice farm along the way. Zanzibar’s reputation for its spice farms made the visit a must. A knowledgeable guide enlightened us about the various spices cultivated on the island, providing insights into their uses and cultural significance. The fragrant and vibrant spice tour served as an aromatic precursor to our exploration of Stone Town.

Upon reaching Stone Town and checking into our hotel, we set out to discover the city’s rich culture and history. Wandering through its narrow streets, we marveled at the blend of Arabic, Persian, Indian, and European influences that defined the city’s unique character. One notable stop was the Anglican Cathedral, a historic monument that served as a poignant reminder of Zanzibar’s complex past. Built on the site of the former slave market, the cathedral stands as a symbol of the island’s journey from a hub of the slave trade to a place of freedom and enlightenment.

Continuing our exploration, we visited the Old Slave Market Monument, where a guided tour unfolded the harrowing history of the slave trade. The experience left us deeply moved, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging and learning from the past. Stone Town, with its vibrant cultural tapestry and historical landmarks, offered a profound and thought-provoking glimpse into Zanzibar’s layered legacy.
The subsequent day unfolded with a full-day boat tour that took us to Prison Island, where we were treated to an enchanting encounter with turtles. Witnessing and feeding these majestic creatures added a touch of wonder to our marine adventure. Following this, our journey led us to Nakupenda Beach, a unique location that transforms into an island for a few hours each day due to the fluctuating tides. This natural phenomenon presented an idyllic setting to swim, bask in the sun, and appreciate the serene surroundings.
Snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of Nakupenda Beach was like diving into a living painting, where vibrant coral and playful fish created a world of color and life beneath the surface.
Nakupenda Beach, with its white sandy shores composed of a mix of sand and corals, provided an ideal backdrop for relaxation. The shallow waters revealed a plethora of starfish scattered across the seabed, creating a magical underwater landscape. The tour operator elevated our experience by setting up a tent and a charcoal barbecue on this temporary land strip. We were treated to a seafood feast, with succulent lobster, squid, and fish sizzling on the grill, infusing the atmosphere with delightful aromas. The combination of the unique setting, delicious barbecue, and the natural beauty of Nakupenda Beach made it a must-see location, leaving us with cherished memories of a day spent in the lap of Zanzibar’s coastal paradise.
As the hours passed, the tide began its inevitable rise, gradually submerging Nakupenda Beach beneath the waters. We found ourselves among the last visitors to leave, witnessing the transformation of the land strip into a secluded islet surrounded by the sea. The sensation of having our own tiny private island, if only for a brief moment, added a special touch to the experience.
With the rhythmic sounds of the waves marking the encroaching tide, we reluctantly bid farewell to our secluded haven. Boarding our boat, we embarked on the return journey to Stone Town. The memory of Nakupenda Beach, its fleeting existence as an island, and the tranquil moments spent there lingered in our minds, enriching our Tanzanian adventure with a sense of exclusivity and natural beauty.
On our last day in Zanzibar, we leisurely wandered through Stone Town’s charming streets, soaking in its vibrant culture, savoring local flavors, and enjoying a perfect, unhurried end to our Tanzanian adventure.
On our final day, we took it easy, wandering around Stone Town, catching a few sights, and simply soaking in the town’s unique vibe. With no rush, we enjoyed the laid-back atmosphere, occasionally stopping to appreciate the local culture. The day was a mix of leisure, good food, and a bit of sightseeing.
Exploring the narrow streets and markets, we took in the local scene and checked out a few landmarks along the way. The focus was on simplicity, enjoying the town without a strict agenda. Later, we treated ourselves to some local cuisine, savoring the flavors of Zanzibar before heading to the airport in the evening. Our last day was about taking it easy, relishing the moments, and wrapping up our Tanzanian adventure on a relaxed note.

In conclusion, the trip to Tanzania was packed with diverse experiences and standout moments. The safari, with its wildlife encounters, and the nights spent in tents, brought us close to nature. Exploring the local culture showcased the richness of Tanzanian heritage, while the warm and welcoming people made our stay truly memorable.
