Unplanned adventure: Georgia’s Canyons, Batumi’s Shores and Kutaisi’s Charm

Introduction

Not all seasons are conducive to travel, and neither are most places, supposedly. Seeking refuge from crowds while exploring destinations not commonly featured on must-visit lists can provide novel experiences, valuable lessons about the world, and ultimately unforgettable moments that arise unexpectedly.

To be candid, a visit to Georgia was never part of my upcoming plans; it happened spontaneously. A chance for a short time away from the office, coupled with a relatively new flight connection from the place I live, gave rise to a new travel opportunity. However, once the opportunity presented itself, I made every effort to turn that idea into reality. After booking tickets, arranging accommodation, and securing a rental car, I had four days to make the most of this unexpected adventure.

Kutaisi

The vibrant energy of the city at night offered a unique perspective on Kutaisi’s cultural ambiance

Upon my arrival in Kutaisi by plane, I couldn’t resist the allure of the city’s nocturnal charm. Embarking on a night stroll, I explored the well-lit streets and iconic landmarks that cast a warm glow over the cobblestone pathways. The vibrant energy of the city at night offered a unique perspective on Kutaisi’s cultural ambiance.

An unforgettable driving experience

Roads riddled with potholes, livestock, and drivers who neither signal nor respect traffic lights or signs

Exploring Georgia initially proved challenging. While I’ve driven in several countries, navigating Georgian roads proved frustrating. It’s a bit of a double-edged sword, but I always strive to maintain a positive outlook. In short, despite the challenges of driving on roads riddled with potholes, livestock, and drivers who neither signal nor respect traffic lights or signs, hopefully it became a funny anecdote to share with friends and laugh about. As a bonus, witnessing taxi drivers savoring local wine during standby time added a unique touch. By the way, the local wine, in my honest opinion, was unexpectedly good.

Khachapuri for dinner

For dinner, I opted for a local restaurant, immersing myself in the distinctive flavors of Georgian cuisine. The aromatic spices and unique culinary combinations provided a delectable introduction to the region’s gastronomic delights.

Too many stray dogs; felt uneasy

A noticeable fact about Kutaisi is the abundance of stray dogs—when I say a lot, I mean a LOT. Initially heartwarming to feed a hungry dog with traditional Khachapuri leftovers (a local cheese pie), the situation turned uneasy when a pack of 25-30 stray dogs converged from all parts of the city, staring at me as if I were the Khachapuri itself. From what I’ve heard, authorities are actively sterilizing stray dogs to address this issue.

Following a satisfying meal, I retired to a cozy hotel nestled next to the gentle flow of the river, ensuring a restful night’s sleep.

The following morning, my exploration of Kutaisi continued, uncovering the city’s historical and cultural treasures. Architectural marvels and insights into Georgia’s past awaited at every turn, enriching my understanding of this captivating destination.

Okatse Canyon

Eager to delve into the natural wonders beyond the city limits, I embarked on a picturesque drive to Okatse Canyon. The journey unfolded through charming villages and scenic landscapes, setting the stage for the awe-inspiring sights that awaited me.

Breathtaking panorama of the deep gorge

Upon reaching Okatse Canyon, a one-hour hike led me to a high vantage point, offering a breathtaking panorama of the deep gorge and meandering river below. The hanging trail, though challenging, provided a sense of accomplishment against the backdrop of the canyon’s grandeur.

Martvili Canyon

The next stop was Martvili Canyon, which, unlike the previous canyon, lacks a hiking trail but offers a fantastic view of waterfalls and a scenic boat ride along the canyon’s base. Kudos to our Georgian boat paddler, as we were too engrossed in taking pictures to row ourselves.

Prometheus Cave

The final stop on the first day was Prometheus Cave. According to Greek Mythology, Prometheus, a Titan and the God of fire, was punished by Zeus. While Prometheus wasn’t found in “his” cave, entering the cave left me speechless—it is by far the most impressive cave I have ever visited. Immense stalactites and stalagmites form this natural wonder dating back 60-70 million years. In one of the accessible halls, weddings can even take place, although not an ideal location for white wedding dresses.

Tskaltubo – Urbex in abandoned Soviet Era buildings

Day two already and the subsequent stop on this journey was Tskaltubo, an abandoned Soviet spa resort in the central part of Western Georgia, favored by Stalin and renowned for its healing waters rich in radon. Today, visitors can explore the park and abandoned buildings for urbex.

Batumi – A big contrast to the rest of Georgia I had seen so far

The contrast between the ruins and my next stop, Batumi, was vast. Batumi, the second-largest city in Georgia, situated on the Black Sea coast, presents itself as a modern city with skyscrapers, cycling and running paths, squares, cleanliness, and an absence of freely roaming livestock. The highlight was a large statue of Medea holding the golden fleece, once possessed by King Aieti of Colchis, the western part of Georgia. Honestly, the true highlight was learning that this region was the formidable Colchis Kingdom, where, according to myth, Jason and the Argonauts ventured to steal the Golden Fleece.

Conclusion – General Remarks

In conclusion, my impromptu trip to Georgia unfolded as a tapestry of unexpected experiences and vivid images that I would have never anticipated. From the enchanting night walks through the illuminated streets of Kutaisi to the rich flavors of local cuisine, and the awe-inspiring landscapes of Okatse Canyon, each moment added a layer of surprise and authenticity to my journey.

The true essence of travel—unpredictable, enlightening, and filled with moments that linger long after the trip concludes

The fusion of urban exploration in Kutaisi with the raw beauty of Okatse Canyon created a unique and enriching travel experience. This spontaneous adventure not only broadened my perspective on Georgia but also left me with memories that are both unexpected and indelible. In embracing the unplanned aspects of the journey, I discovered the true essence of travel—unpredictable, enlightening, and filled with moments that linger long after the trip concludes. Georgia, with its blend of history, nature, and cultural nuances, proved to be a destination where the unexpected became the highlight of my unforgettable journey.
